We still have work to do in Kansas City. According to reports released daily by KCPD, homicides in Kansas City have seen an approximate 26% decrease as of the end of June when compared to the same time last year. This sounds like a big step forward. It is. However, this does not provide the entire story. During this same time frame, nonfatal shootings have shown an increase when compared to the same time frame in prior years. According to the data KCPD has had 291 reported living victims of shootings this calendar year. A 30% increase from last year. The data also shows where these shootings most commonly occur. The use of data assists KCPD, and the rest of our community, to determine where the crime is occurring, where it persists and where, most efficiently, limited resources can be utilized to prevent and intervene.
